Parenting Through the Struggle – When Children Battle Unhealthy Habits

“The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them…” – Psalm 34:17 (NIV)

As parents, we often dream of raising children who are strong, faithful, and purpose-driven. But what happens when our children grow up battling unhealthy habits – addictions to screens, substances, or destructive behaviors? Does that mean we’ve failed?

Let’s look again at two (one lesser-known but) powerful biblical parents:

1. Manoah – The Father Who Asked for Help

When Manoah learned he would father Samson, he prayed, “…teach us how to bring up the boy…” (Judges 13:8 – NIV). Samson, despite his divine calling, struggled with impulsivity and poor choices, yet God still used him.

Lesson: Even when our children falter, God’s purpose can still prevail. Like Manoah, we must keep seeking God’s wisdom in how to parent through the uncertainty.

2. Hannah – The Mother Who Let Go

Hannah gave Samuel back to God, trusting Him completely (1 Samuel 1:27-28). She didn’t control his path – she released him into God’s hands.

Lesson: Sometimes, the most powerful parenting move is surrender. When we release our children to God, we invite His grace to do what we cannot.

When our children struggle with addictions and unhealthy habits, they are often symptoms of deeper wounds. As parents, we are called to:

  • Pray persistently (1 Thessalonians 5:17)
  • Speak truth in love (Ephesians 4:15)
  • Model grace and discipline (Hebrews 12:11)

Remember, God’s promise still stands even when children stray; the seeds of faith planted early can bear fruit later. “…He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion…” (Philippians 1:6 – NIV).

Are you parenting a child who’s struggling? Don’t give up. God sees. Keep planting, keep praying, and trust that His purpose is greater than their present pain.
